Heat Pump Services in Bellevue, WA

A heat pump is an option for residential comfort that can benefit almost any home. A heat pump comes with an enormous advantage compared to other systems such as furnaces, boilers, or air conditioners: it can work as both a heating system and an air conditioning system. For new homes, or a homeowner planning to replace the AC and furnace, comfort for all through the year can be taken care of in a single installation.

At S&L Mechanical Heating and Cooling, we know the many benefits of heat pumps because we install, replace, repair, and maintain them in Bellevue, WA and the surrounding areas. If you’re looking to have a heat pump, or your current one requires service, call our NATE-certified technicians. We treat every customer like they’re our only customer!

How a Heat Pump Both Heats and Cools

A heat pump isn’t a combination of a separate air conditioner and heater packaged together. It’s a single system that uses the same process to cool a home as to warm it. In most ways, it resembles an air conditioner. Refrigerant is placed under pressure in a compressor and then circulates between an indoor and outdoor coil, absorbing heat from one coil and releasing heat from the other.

An air conditioner, however, can only work in one direction—absorbing heat along the indoor coil. A heat pump can make the system operate in reverse, so the outdoor coil absorbs heat and the indoor coil releases it. It’s as simple as a reversing valve changing the direction of refrigerant flow, and presto! The AC changes to a heater or vice versa.

The Advantages of a Heat Pump Installation

The big benefit of a heat pump is that it can take on heating and cooling responsibilities. A true comfort system for all seasons! But there are other benefits to consider. If you don’t have a gas line for your home and have relied previously on an electric furnace for winter warmth, the change to a heat pump can make a tremendous difference in your utility bills. A heat pump draws on less electricity to run because it doesn’t have to generate heat—it only has to move heat, and this isn’t as much of an electrical power drain. Heat pumps are also very safe heating systems, with few emissions and an exterior that doesn’t even get hot in heating mode.
