Ductless Mini Splits in Bellevue, WA

Central air conditioning and heating was a major change for home comfort in the 1960s. Using ductwork spread through a house, all rooms could receive the benefit of air conditioning and heating. But the technology of home comfort continues to progress, and now there are heat pumps available that require no ductwork at all to spread comfort to different spots in a house. Ductless mini split heat pumps have already made a big impression in Japan and Europe, and now homes here are enjoying the differences they can make.

To arrange for ductless heating and cooling installation in your house, or to arrange for ductless mini split services for your current system, call S&L Mechanical Heating and Cooling. We’re a full-service HVAC contractor for Bellevue, WA and the surrounding areas.

How Ductless Heating and Cooling Works

Ductless mini splits are types of heat pumps (and yes, that means they provide both heating and cooling). The difference between a standard split system heat pump and a ductless one is that a ductless system uses multiple indoor air handlers rather than a single one that connects to ducts. Small individual air handlers are placed on the walls in different rooms, and each air handler connects through a hole in the wall to the single outdoor unit through power cables and refrigerant lines.

When someone wants heating or cooling for a room, they only have to turn on the mounted air handler. A refrigerant coil in the air handler either releases or absorbs heat, and a blower fan sends the conditioned air straight into the room. There’s no need for ducts to carry the conditioned air.

Reasons to Consider a Ductless Mini Split Installation

You might think, "That’s neat, but why should I consider using ductless rather than the tried–and–true split–system heat pump?" First, going ductless isn’t the right choice for every home. Always work with professionals to ensure you have a comfort system matched to your household needs. Second, there are some excellent benefits a ductless system provides for the right home:

  • Lower energy bills: The mini air handlers have smaller motors and use less power than a single indoor air handler, so they cost less to run.
  • No ductwork troubles: Air ducts can leak, and they also allow heat gain and heat loss that affects efficiency. Take ducts out of the equation, and these problems are gone.
  • Zone Control: The air handlers can be operated separately from one another, so only the air handlers in occupied rooms need to run. This is another way to save money.
  • Flexibility: Ductless heat pumps are perfect for old homes without space for ducts, new home construction, or for heating and cooling spaces that have always been a comfort problem.
